Books:
  • Pajama Time by Sandra Boynton.  Really a performance number.
  • Maisy's Bedtime by Lucy Cousins. Props: Panda bear. I've heard people complain that Maisy books are a bit dull, but I think she is very zen. I had a lot of fun with this, brushing my teeth, putting my imaginary PJs on, really turning off the lights, and I even went out the door to "go potty."
  • Sweet Dreams by Kimiko Kajikawa . Lovely, and the babies paid attention. (small well behaved crowd.)
  • Dinosaur vs. Bedtime by Bob Shea. His stuff is a great addition to baby storytime. So funny! So noisy! Great pix!  I did a lot of roaring, and at the end of the book when Dinosaur went down for the count, I collapsed slowly onto the floor, curled up, and went to sleep.  V. good with babies.
  • Tumble Bumble by Felicia Bond. So jiggy and cute. 
  • The Napping House by Audrey Wood.  Big Book
  • How to Tuck in your Sleepy Lion   board book Clarke

Songs:  
  • Five Bears in a Bed. I love this production number. I love the moms all going "whoopsie" as I push the bear off the cushion, over the edge of the table and on to the floor. I love Misha rushing to pick up the bear and hand it over discreetly to me -- a great assistant.
  • This is the Way We Wash Our Face
  • I Had a Little Turtle
  • Five little monkeys

A Bundle of Babies today

We did a lot of bouncing and hand clapping and wiggling and stretching today!  Doreen Cronin's books are always fun -- what till you're old enough for her classic, "Diary of a Worm!" We sang many songs today. "Mama's little baby loves bouncin', bouncin'" is still my all time favorite, but I did enjoy performing the new "Socks and shoes" to the tune of Three Blind Mice:  "Socks and shoes, socks and shoes/ They're off Whenever I choose, Whenever I choose/ I take them off and I throw them away/But then I need them to go out and play/Maybe I should leave them on someday/My socks and shoes."  The babies stopped what they were doing for a moment as they watched me unvelcro my sandals and throw them over my shoulders.  Worked in vaudeville! The babies were exceptionally well dressed today, a pastel rainbow, in their eyelet lace and embroidery: Elsie likes to play afterwards, but during story hour she's a very good listener!

Ms. Travis Valentine's Day List

In case all you wonderful mothers are wondering what to get Ms. Travis for Valentine's Day, I've got a little list:     ❤    to see you at storyhour! I  ❤    to hear you join in at storyhour as I read! I  ❤    it when I read about dinosaurs and you say, "Oh, nice dinosaur!" That echoing is great for focusing your child's attention on the story, and reading should be interactional. (And please don't talk to your friends during storyhour -- there's plenty of time to chat afterwards.) I would  ❤   it if you took off your toddler's shoes before play time. So would the other babies!

Color Storyhour, Red

Exciting Announcement:  Oleshka (Oleg) and his mother Anna have gotten me fired up to introduce baby signing to storytime.  We'll start slow, with a few signs each week and a lot of repetition.  I'm thinking we'll do "Hello", "Mother" and "More".   Play:   Blow up a balloon and release -- always an attention getter. Paint red from a red paintpot onto a big white piece of paper. Wear your red clown bow and red & white Cat in the Hat hat. Little Red Wagon. Book: Little Monsters by Jan Pienkowski claimed the attention of 20 babies at once!  Yay, little monsters! Play: Red Ladybug puppet Book: Dinosaur vs. Bedtime by Bob Shea.  This big red dinosaur was jussssst  right for this group. He did a lot of roaring and the kids did a lot of listening. At the end, I read myself right down to the ground and stuck my thumb in my mouth and 'went to sleep.' Very fun. Christmas performance: Dinosaur vs. Santa.  Not so good.  None of these babies
