  • My Dad Loves Me by Marianne Richmond. Nice. Just as with Cabrera's Carry Me, the baby critter is shown doing things with dad that babies can identify with. This is a terrific storytime choice.

  • Didn't get to: Pete's a Pizza by William Steig. Roll out your babies and dust them with cheese while you read!

Books: Quiet, Loud by Leslie Patricelli. I love ALL Patricelli's books and this one is perfect for showing quiet and LOUD! Snappy Sounds , one of those noisy board books by Harwood, I introduced: "Now we will be quiet again and read a book. Reading books is such a nice, quiet thing to do." The moms really did get quiet at that point -- so that you could almost hear the barking and meowing and cheeping noises that came from this silly book -- except since when do bunnies go B-o-i-n-g? I skipped that page. The text is cute and rhymy. Gooble Gooble Mooooo Tractor Book by Jez Alborough.  Might need to shorten a bit for the very young ones, but Alzborough's created a perfect amalgamation here of animal sounds and machine sounds. Peek-a-Boo by Marie Torres Cimarusti.  This is a very nice peekaboo book about simple, unscary Halloween creatures: an unscary witch, an unscary skeleton, an unscary ghost, etc.   Songs: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star with my little pitch pipe is...

Fish Storytime, Wednesday, February 22

B o o k s Pop-Up Commotion in the Ocean by Andreae Silly Faces Board Book -- the kids were a bit shy about this. Deep Sea Dive by Salina Yoon.  Luckily, I had a lot of the puppets for this. Bedtime Kiss for Little Fish by Lorie Ann Grover P l a y s I gathered up all my sea creature puppets and put them in my Old MacDonald bag.  "Let's go fishing!" I told the kids. "Let's throw out our hook!  Reel it in, and see what we caught!" Then I pulled a creature out of the bag.  No! We don't want to keep him! The octopus had too many legs; the shark too many teeth; the dolphin was too nice; the sea turtle was endangered; the sea horse was too beautiful; and finally we caught a fish. (Use the crab too!!!) (Sung to the melody of Wheels on the Bus.) I passed out the scarves and we practiced being waves first. 1. Sheep Storyhour

The babies were far from sheep-ish at our sheep storyhour today! My storytelling chair was full of them! I felt like the Three Bears confronted with that Goldilocks person. Books:  Where is the Green Sheep by Mem Fox was a major hit.  I looked up at one point and the babies were all listening! I don't expect this to happen again any time soon, but a roomful of attentive toddlers is kind of amazing. This book is short, rhymes, works on colors, but most important, I think, is that its them is where is it. We love object permanence , don't we? So reassuring when we find that sheep asleep. Time to Sleep, Sheep the Sheep  by Mo Willems.  Shows the animals doing activities kids understand, bath etc. Baa-Choo!  by Sarah Weeks (easy reader) about a sheep who can't finish his sneeze.
