Books

  • This is Not a Book by Jean Jullien.  Hoooo, what a perfect book for this theme! I think I'll skip the butt crack page for this group though.
  • It's a Little Book by Lane Smith. This book is fun for acting out -- pretending to chew it, quacking with it, etc.  But the joke is based on sarcasm, and babies just don't get that.  Short & fun though. Might cut a few pages.  Bring a Big Book for contrast. I used Noisy Breakfast. Good and short.
  • Dinosaur vs. the Library by Bob Shea is about as perfect for a set of babies as any book could be. I didn't use puppets.  I turned my head in one direction and roared for Dinosaur, then turned my head in the other direction and mooed confusedly, or was shy turtle, or was sad owl. But I might leave out that sad owl.  It makes me too sad.
  • Clap Your Hands starring ELMO!  I just grabbed the goofiest book from my office shelf that doesn't get used very often. This one has a big red Elmo puppet head sticking out of it, with the song inside. Very fun.

I  ❤    to hear you join in at storyhour as I read! I  ❤    it when I read about dinosaurs and you say, "Oh, nice dinosaur!" That echoing is great for focusing your child's attention on the story, and reading should be interactional. (And please don't talk to your friends during storyhour -- there's plenty of time to chat afterwards.) I would  ❤   it if you took off your toddler's shoes before play time. So would the other babies!

A Bundle of Babies today

We did a lot of bouncing and hand clapping and wiggling and stretching today!  Doreen Cronin's books are always fun -- what till you're old enough for her classic, "Diary of a Worm!" We sang many songs today. "Mama's little baby loves bouncin', bouncin'" is still my all time favorite, but I did enjoy performing the new "Socks and shoes" to the tune of Three Blind Mice:  "Socks and shoes, socks and shoes/ They're off Whenever I choose, Whenever I choose/ I take them off and I throw them away/But then I need them to go out and play/Maybe I should leave them on someday/My socks and shoes."  The babies stopped what they were doing for a moment as they watched me unvelcro my sandals and throw them over my shoulders.  Worked in vaudeville! The babies were exceptionally well dressed today, a pastel rainbow, in their eyelet lace and embroidery: Elsie likes to play afterwards, but during story hour she's a very good listener!

Baby Storytime about Trains on Wednesday, September 6 @ 10:30

We're going to be blowing on that long lonesome train whistle at storytime today, so plan on jumping aboard! Props:  Train whistle, Freight Train from Kizclub on clothesline.  We counted the cars but the babies were too young to do the colors. Stories: TRAINS GO  by Steve Light was a great, noisy storytime opener.  The moms could see the sounds the different trains made and joined it to help read this one aloud. Freight Train  by Donald Crews. I printed out all the train cars courtesy of the wonderful folks at  KIZCLUB  -- imagine making all the pictures of some of the greatest kids' classic available for download, what a great idea. I wish I could say that I then took the trouble of stretching up my clothesline and told the story that way, but I'm afraid that'll have to wait till Friday.
